In 1944, the first Kress meteorite was found in a roadside ditch in Swisher County, Texas. The meteorite weighed 57 g. Much later, in 2000, a 455-g stone was found as well, bringing the total known weight of the Kress meteorite to nearly 2 kilos.

The Kress meteorite is classified as an ordinary chondrite H-5. A characteristic of the Kress is a weathered appearance. In most specimens, very little free iron is discernible.
