On the evening of January 31, 1991, near the small village of Campos Sales, the night sky was illuminated by a bright light and a thundering boom could be heard throughout the area. These occurrences heralding the fall of a meteorite were met with awe by the local inhibitants. The fragments were named in honor of the Brazilian village. A total known weight of 23.68 kg has been recovered from the site of the fall.

The Campos Sales meteorite is classified as a L5 chondrite. It is lightly shocked with many chondrules. The main shock features are cracks in the olivine.
