So Steve Arnold finally found the first piece of the meteorite that fell in April 16, 2024. Captured trajectory on Doppler radar gave us a region to hunt, Steve put in the hard yards and located the anchor piece. From there he called in the troops to flesh out the strewnfield.
I drove as close as I could to the strewnfield, which is all in BLM land so permission not an issue. The road went from paved to unpaved, and from unpaved to little more than a cattle path. Then I began to fishtail in deep sand and made the call to not venture deeper. Getting sand stuck is bad, although I did bring a makeshift sand ladder (which i also used for camp cooking).
The terrain was barren and not fit for man or beast. I had 6 galleons of water and 7 days of food to last the week.
The fragments of meteorite were bluish grey with hopefully black fusion crust somewhere on it. Very hard to spot amongst the grey black desert patina rocks.
Food and water are critical. On the left you can see the make shift sand ladder I carried with me for safety. Also doubles for kitchen shelf.
In the end, the teams out there found 7 fragments, but I found nothing unfortunately. I pushed north the stretch the strewnfield and found nada. I still think there are kilos to be found downrange. Our fragements are just bits I think.
